About Camel Dairy Smits

Our camel milk is from Dutch soil: the camel dairy is located in Berlicum in Brabant. It is the only professional camel dairy farm in Europe and the camel milk from this farm is the only one that can be legally sold raw in the EU.

Frank, a graduate of the Higher Agricultural School (HAS) in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, has turned his passion for camel milk into a thriving business. It all started with a vision – inspired by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which considers camel milk to be one of the healthiest animal milks. Research showed that there was potential for economically responsible production of camel milk in the Netherlands.

In 2006 it started with three one-humped camels (dromedaries) and this has now grown to more than 100 camels. The camel dairy farm has grown into a company where both the camels and the employees as well as customers and guests find a nice place.

We work daily on good animal health and improvement of animal welfare, among other things by always keeping the calves and their mothers close to each other. Employees can express their ambitions and enthusiasm in animal care, but also tourism, processing the milk into milk products and many other tasks on the farm.

The good experiences with camel milk are shared through word-of-mouth advertising, so that we have built up and are still expanding a nice regular customer base. And guests not only have a fun day (or even week) out, but also learn about camels, farm life and the countryside. Camel dairy farm Smits wants to offer as much added value as possible for people on and around the farm.

Animal welfare

Camels are not only extremely intelligent, but they also have an excellent memory. As friendly animals, they punish unfriendly behavior and thrive in an environment where they are treated with care. At our dairy, we attach great importance to the well-being of our camels. That is why we strive for regularity in their daily routine and make sure that it is quiet in the barn during milking to cause as little stress as possible.

Mother and calf

A special aspect of our care practices is the emphasis we place on the bond between mother and calf. We understand that this bond is essential for the well-being of both animals, which is why we cherish this bond and ensure that they can stay together throughout the important early stages of the calf’s life. camels. That is why we strive for regularity in their daily routine and make sure that it is quiet in the barn during milking to cause as little stress as possible.

Camel dairy farm Smits also contributes to such studies.
